„While some architects have been experimenting with mushroom mycelium<\/a> as a cladding material, architect\u00a0Dirk Hebel<\/a> and engineer Philippe Block<\/a> have gone one step further \u2013 by using fungi to build self-supporting structures.<\/p>\n

Hebel, who leads the Sustainable Construction unit at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology<\/a>, and Block, who founded the Block Research Group at ETH Z\u00fcrich<\/a>, have created a tree-shaped structure consisting almost entirely of mycelium.<\/p>\n

According to the duo, the material \u2013 which is formed from the root network of mushrooms \u2013 could provide the structure of a two-storey building, if it is designed with the right geometries.“<\/p>\n
